Aldi signs lease for largest D.C. store, in Fort Totten

Aldi has agreed to open a 25,000-square-foot store at Art Place at Fort Totten, the Cafritz Foundation's redevelopment of the Riggs Plaza apartment complex at South Dakota Avenue and Kennedy Street NE.

Art Place at Fort Totten is a multiphase project led by The Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation. Approved for 2 million square feet, it will ultimately cover 16.5 acres, replacing a 60-year-old complex of largely affordable apartment homes developed by Morris Cafritz and his son Calvin, in addition to three small warehouses. The parcel is a stone’s throw from the Fort Totten Metro station, and a block away from the Walmart-anchored Fort Totten Square development.

Its first phase, which opened in 2017, includes the 520-unit Modern at Art Place apartments, a pharmacy, dentist’s office and urgent care. The long-planned XSport Fitness center apparently is not happening. While the foundation still plans to incorporate a fitness center concept, a spokeswoman for the project said, the opening timeframe is still to be determined.
